The difficult thing about this project

It's the characters. I can always make up a fictional character's look from any angle. However, for this particular project I'll be animating characters based on real people.
Hence, I need nail down the look of the characters early on.

One thing I have in mind when animating these characters is that I won't make the linework super clean. I will retain the sketchiness of the drawings. I believe doing so would cut down the time for the animation process.

I always thought walk cycles are easy to animate. Boy, was I wrong! So many things are happening at the same time!

Setting the style

The Bermuda District

I changed the title of Restless to Bermuda District, becuase I wanted it to sound meaningful at the same time quirky. For instance, Fooly Cooly, Fairy Tail, The World God Only knows.

Furthermore, I used the word 'Bermuda' to play with concept of searching for missing people and solving mysteries. Excuse me,if I don't make sense since I'm typing this while half asleel.

The premise goes something like this: "a small town in America has been experiencing missing occurences for years. Hence, earning title of 'the Bermuda District'. One day a college student dropout encountered a 'survivor' of the supernatural kidnappings. Moreover, this ghostly stranger claims that he can solve the case but requires a human host in order to do so. Thus, both men, along with a close companion of the stranger, try to solve the mystery that has plagued the town for years. As they plow on for the truth, they soon realised nothing is as it seems."

There you go. I know it's wonky and needs some more refinement.

I also changed the personality of Rahcel slightly to suit the plot. I modelled her personality after Haruhi Suzumiya. I want her to be an oddball among the townfolk.

This allows some tension between Nick and Rachel. They either like each other or they don't. Whereas Peter and Rachel hit it off like close siblings. Rachel initially, in the story will be more reserved when she is with Peter.
After Peter's departure, her personality changed as she realised she needs to be more independent than she's used to. Hence, Nick has to deal with a more extroverted and bossy Rachel.

Besides that, Rachel follows the footsteps of Peter as a wannabe investigator. Of course, she needs help from Peter himself, through Nick. She will not be aware of the Nick's role in the story, but he tags along with Rachel as they unravel the mystery.

I have other plans for the story, like including an official detective or comissioner. This adds more conflict into the story.

Alrighty, I think that's about it for tonight.

New Design

I made this using Flash CS6. Practicing with vectors.

I redesigned Rachel, to give her a stronger personality. Reason is due to all the crap she has to go through, she needs to hide behind a strong willed persona, despite the fact she is actually a very feminine and sweet girl.

However, somethign still looks off about the "screenshot". The characters doesn't seem to blend in well.

Planning my work

Seriously? This is what I came up with?! I clearly lack the patience to plan out my animations

Lately I have been very unmotivated and uninspired. I want to create awesome animation but I seem to lack the patience to study the "technical" stuff, like learning Maya and to be more enthusiastic about my subjects.
What's wrong with me? Is my flaming passion dying?
Why is it so hard to find buddies who have the same interest as me, even in design school?!

As you could probably deduce from recent posts, they all look very uninspired and forced. And to make matters worse, my spiritual life is failing. I don't have the same drive to talk to God as I used to.

I don't like pretending, I just want live life sincerely and passionately. I want to produce artworks that could inspire others but it seems like the artist himself isn't inspired.

I need to grow out of this. I need to overcome this overwhelming feelings of emptiness.

Experimental

Was experimenting with a different drawing style. I am trying to blend the aesthetic of both japanese animation and western animation. The style I had in mind was the French style. Can't say I succeeded.

Hair fetish

Marissa... a supporting character for my story

Hair is the one of the most deceivingly difficult to animate objects, due to the fact that you are animating several strands of "ribbons". Despite that, I always catch myself animating hair (only). I guess it's because I find it hypnotizing when looking at a character's hair sway in the wind.

Anyway, Valentine's Day is around the corner and I really want to animate a short film. What would it be? Can I do it?
